Loganism of the day
Mama, I'm hungry.
Ok, we'll make rice and vegetables when we get home.

Round Table to the rescue!
I'm fighting a nasty headache and didn't feel like cooking tonight. Logan asked if we could eat out on the front porch (the weather is gorgeous!), so who am I to refuse a request like that? :)

13 months old
I'm so behind on blogging, I've decided I'm really no longer a true blogger. I'm more like a "mobile" blogger. ;-) But hey, I do what I can, when I can.
Speaking of not being a better blogger, I've got pics coming out of my ears that I just never have had the chance to post. So, some pics from Callum's 1st birthday cake:
So - Callum turned 13 months old last week and about the most celebratory thing I can think of, which I did that day, was spend two hours at the dentist's getting my mouth drilled into. It took so long (work on two cavities, an old one and a new one, back in my wisdom tooth, which is a hard place to reach), that the anesthetic actually wore off by the end. Good thing I have a high tolerance for pain ;-)
In any case, Callum is now 13 months old! My baby is now a toddler!
He's a walking maniac - his balance is getting better and better every day, as he's trying out running here and there, to keep up with his big brother. Whew! I've also noticed he's been practicing his climbing skills more and more - not as much as Logan did at this age, but he's certainly interested in getting up to the higher places (like climbing up onto his brother's bed) which have an abundance of interesting things to get into.
Speaking of getting into - last month, I'd say he was all about opening every drawer he could find, dumping out its contents, and putting other things in them. This last month, however, he's lost some of that interest in investigating drawers (unless it's the top ones which he can now reach). Instead, he wants to open doors (which he can't do but he tries) or open gates (which he CAN do) or push buttons that light up and make the TV turn off.
He knows exactly what he's doing with that last one too - since he'll do a half turn and look back at us mischievously before he pushes the button. I guess you could say he's in the "testing" phase? It certainly tests our patience.
Speaking of patience, he's fond of sharing - he likes to feed me his cheerios and offer me his toys. But, if you're not quick on the take, he'll start THROWING the toys, because apparently that's just as good as handing them to you. In general, I think he likes the idea that he can start swinging his arm and letting go with whatever object is in his hand, and see how far the object travels and how loud Mommy will yell. ;-)
He's still mostly just babbling with no real distinction in words, but every once in awhile he identifies with "dog" and points to Odin. I've tested it by asking him where's the doggy? And he'll point to Odin and repeat "dog" (it sounds more like "dah"), so that's been kind of fun. I think he understands a lot more than we realize - but he hasn't picked up on vocalizing most of it yet. Instead, he's become a master at pointing to whatever he wants (to touch, to see, to get closer to, or the direction he wants us to go). So very much like his brother, he's a demanding little kid.
Speaking of demanding, Callum is a pro at finding his milk bottle at the last place we left it and bringing it to you (again, if you don't take his "offer" quick enough, he'll SLAM it on the floor at your feet with a message that rings loud and clear: MILK WOMAN! DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?!?) He's not into feeding himself as much as Logan was at this age and is really just so-so at using his sippy cup (he likes to chew on it more than drink from it - although as you've seen just a few days ago, he's starting to use his straw/sippy cup much more often). I wonder if it's because I have less patience to allow him the freedom to feed himself? Or is it because I'm too tired to think up inventive "big boy finger foods" for him to try when the jarred food is so much easier? Or is it because he's the baby of the family and we treat him as such.... and he's learned life is so much easier when he's waited on hand and foot?
I suppose only time will tell. Whatever the reason, we are enjoying our baby prince very much. :)

Some serious pie
I worked super late last night, got up and worked some more, then took off just before noon to pick up Jon and the boys.
We've decided NOT to rent a car this trip and rely on public transportation. Seattle actually has some great transportation options available. So, I hopped onto the light rail (the station is a block and a half from our hotel) and headed to the airport, met everyone at baggage claim (I received thrilled welcomes from all three) and then headed back downtown on the light rail again. Logan had a blast on the "choo-choo train", pointing out the airplanes and airport (as we left), other trains that kept passing us, the bridges, the tunnels and the TRACKS MOM!! LOOK AT THE TRACKS!!!
Seriously. My kid was tickled pink about tracks.
After dropping off the bags at the hotel, we decided to grab a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant called Serious Pie. Super yummy and different flavored pizzas. This pic was taken just outside the front door, with our hotel tower in the distance.
After lunch, we walked all over downtown Seattle searching for a store that sells diapers and formula. Who would have thought it'd be so hard to find?!? We also made it down to the Pike Street Market and did a little shopping on our way back to the hotel.
When we got back, Jon decided to find out if the room next to ours was free since he was worried we'd all have trouble sleeping in the same room. It was booked but they offered us a free upgrade to a Junior Suite (two adjoining rooms) in the other tower.
We took it (giving up our fantastic view but it was a hard offer to pass)!

Parenting at its finest
A few days ago, I was at the table with Logan, battling out another mealtime negotiation when I muttered under my breath, "You're a pain in my ass".
To which Logan replied, "No, you're a pain in my ass!"
Whoops. ;-)
Jon had a work event he needed to be at all day Saturday so after soccer, pictures and lunch with my parents, I left the boys in their capable hands and took the train up to the city. We actually didn't stay too long after I got there, since the party was dying down and Jon was getting pretty tired from being there all day, so we headed home soon after.
While driving home, we looked up movie times, to see what was playing and when, since it was a rare kids-free night for us. Unfortunately, we were in that awkward "in between" movie times where we would've had to wait a good hour or so before the next movie time started. The more and more we talked about it, the more and more Option B sounded like an awesome plan.
Option B you ask?
Grab some frozen yogurt, watch a few episodes of True Blood (which we're kind of addicted to now) and crash early.
I felt like we had just played out the "You know you're a parent when...." series.
Today Callum got to try apples for the first time. As always, he did a great job eating them - although interestingly, it seemed like he gobbled up his peas much faster! Could we have a veggie in the making? :)

The Outsider
In the car today I asked Logan if he'd share some of his snack with me. He said "No, this is for boys only."
WTF! You can bet I made him share plenty after that. ;-)

Peas and other things
I left work early and unexpectedly today - poor little Callum seems to have caught a head cold, but the school was worried because after waking up from his nap, his eyes were super swollen and goopy. :( I wasn't completely surprised since I noticed his eyes were a little red around the edges and tired looking last night, he had a really difficult time sleeping through the night, and he was really congested and clearly having sinus issues this morning.
So, I took him to the doctors and the good news is, it's nothing serious but totally treatable. We got some antibiotic drops for his eyes which I started tonight so that his eyes will (hopefully) start improving immediately. His congestion is all in his head, not in his chest, which is good and means he's got a simple head cold that should go away very soon.
I'm not sure why, given how crappy Callum's feeling, but I decided to try out another new food tonight - peas - which he seemed to be okay with. Not thrilled, but I think that has more to do with him not feeling well and not having much of an appetite than anything. We'll see in a few days once he's back to his old self, if he continues to eat the peas or not.
Amidst the extra coddling of a crying weepy sick baby, Logan was being particularly snotty to me tonight and I had very little patience with him throughout the entire evening. However, there was one little part of the evening that made me laugh. We had just got home and I was trying to calm Mr. Callum down so I asked Logan to let Grover out of his crate (which he often helps me out with when we get home each night).
Logan wasn't interested and said "No."
That, of course, pissed me off. I told him again, with a much firmer tone and stink eye to go with it - Let. Grover. Out.
Logan replied, "No Mom, I'm too busy!"
I wasn't expecting this response and lost it, unable to keep a straight face after that. ;-)

HOT HOT HOT!
Not sure what Jon was thinking when he dressed Logan in jeans and a long sleeved shirt this morning. He must've been reading the SF weather report instead. ;-) (luckily we had a short sleeved shirt in Logan's cubby that the teachers changed him into today).
In other news, Callum tried bananas yesterday. He doesn't seem to have a preference (yet) but gobbles up anything I give him. :)

Sweet Potatoes
Last night I decided to try out sweet potatoes with Callum. He didn't seem to notice the change from carrots to sweet potatoes - as he continued to wolf them down just as fast as he's been eating the carrots. He's been a really healthy eater, polishing off 2 jars of food each night for dinner in addition to his bottle of milk! He's also still waking up once in the middle of the night to down another bottle - I feel like we can't keep up nor get enough food into him! (I recall feeling this same way with Logan too).
The good news is, he's adjusted back to a more "normal" night time routine this past week and hasn't been as awful on us throughout the night like he was doing over the weekend, now generally just waking long enough to polish off his bottle and then pass out again for another few hours before morning. Jon has also started helping out more, waking up and covering the middle of the night feeding most nights this week, since I'm down to nursing 1-2 times a day (usually morning and bedtime). Thank goodness too, because with the ridiculous work week I've been having, I've needed all the help I can get just to keep from toppling over each day!
And don't get me started on what a challenge it's been just getting out of the house early enough to get into the office at a decent hour! Let's just say I'm still adjusting to being back to work full time.

Carrots
Today I suggested Jon feed Callum some jarred food, to see if that would satiate him a bit more and help him sleep through the night (he's been doing great with the rice cereal but frankly, we're at that point where we'll try anything to get him to sleep a bit longer!). So, we decided on carrots as his first real "solid" food!

Callum seemed to enjoy the new taste. Jon was able to get through a little less than a jar before Callum had enough - he was QUITE the mess afterward! But, he was all smiles. Later this evening, I gave him the rest of that jar, plus TWO MORE JARS. The kid was a fiend and just kept on going. I was thinking this would be GREAT news for tonight - however, after he was done, he proceeded to have a massive poop which spilled out all over his high chair seat (incidentally, Logan was yelling to me from the bathroom about the massive poop he just had himself. Jon was conveniently NOT home but at a rugby game....) *sigh*

Callum passed out soon after and now I'm wondering if that big poop just made some more room in his little tummy which I was hoping to fill with the carrots. Hopefully he won't wake up so hungry and wide-eyed tonight. *shrug* I guess we'll see.
