On Marriage

A classic conversation between Jon and I last weekend:

Me: Hey babe, do your pants need to be washed?

Jon: Sure.

Me: Ok, can you go grab them for me?

Jon: Nah, they're good.

....

And yet, I still love being married to the (lazy) guy!  ;-)

Jon left bright and early this morning for a "work" conference this week.  Work being in quotes because, while he will do plenty of work and networking while he's there, he will also have more than his fair share of fun and drinking sprinkled in wherever and whenever he can.

I know, I know, I sound bitter.  I'm not particularly crazy about the timing of the trip, since I've been Solo-Mom for the last two weeks while he heals from surgery, and am pretty worn out.  But what can you do.  Hopefully the time will fly by!  Wish me luck.  :)

Missing Daddy

I think this trip is probably the longest Jon and I have been apart and while I've stayed busy enough to get through the majority of it, it finally hit me driving home today, how much I really miss him (probably last night too, as I kept waking up and had a really restless night).

I think the boys miss him as well - Callum was extra needy tonight and Logan was a pain in the butt at school today (so bad that, it sounds like he may not be allowed back to soccer!).

Sadly, Jon's work is taking longer than expected and his trip home is delayed a day (so he'll be home Saturday evening instead of tomorrow). We're going to touch base tomorrow but hopefully he finishes up everything he needs to, so that he isn't delayed any further! We sure do miss our Daddy (and I am pretty damn exhausted!).

Loganism of (yester)day

I forgot to post this yesterday but it's amusing and shouldn't be forgotten.  :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I like my soccer coach because he's funny.
How is he funny?
Because he talks in Spanish.
Jon left early Wednesday morning for another trip to Europe.  My head cold seems to be getting better, but my back is still pretty bad.  I tried going into the office on Wednesday after Jon left, but was unable to sit down for a few minutes and ended up participating in a few meetings standing up.  After a couple of hours of that, I decided it was silly to stick around in pain and went back home to continue lying down on ice and working, laptop on lap, from the couch.
I've had a few bad episodes in the evening, where my back pain twinges worse than usual, and is accompanied with nausea, woozy shakes and lightheadedness.  Unfortunately, it was so bad yesterday evening that I didn't feel stable enough to drive to the boys' school to pick them up at the end of the day.  THANKFULLY, I have a fantastic network of friends and Kim came to the rescue, once again!
Other than fighting the same head cold, the boys haven't caused me too many problems so far, so at least that is good.
It's going to be a very long 10 days without Jon here to help out, but we'll survive, one way or another!  Wish us luck.  :)
A new tradition
Whoopsie!  I meant to post these IMMEDIATELY but oh hey, look at me, I didn't.  What's new!?
Four-ish weeks ago, I traveled to Redmond to get my work on and while flying home, waved hello and good-bye to Jon, as he took off for Amsterdam.  My poor little Callum had come down with a pretty bad fever that day, which meant I stayed home the next day caring for him and trying to manage that fever.  It got much worse, before it ever got better, and I found out several days later that he had probably caught and was fighting a case of roseola (because he doesn't catch enough weird diseases as it is!).
All while Jon was sipping on Dutch white beers.
*ahem*
But anyhoo, I wasn't as worried about the fact that Callum had just conquered roseola as I was concerned about how long he'd be contagious.  Since, our good friends Eric and Jill were coming to visit a few days later with Amelia and their little baby boy Trent.  A few rushed calls to the doctor that day and I was relieved to find out all was well, Callum (and the Cables) were out of the woods and in the clear.
The Cables arrived Thursday afternoon and stayed through the weekend.  I took Friday off from work so that we could visit, catch up and let the four kids turn the house upside down and inside out.  We wore them out at Happy Hollow Park where the kids had an absolute blast.
Jon finally got home Saturday afternoon, which happened to also be his birthday, so we had a sitter come by and watch the three older kids while the four adults (plus Trent) went out to a lovely Ethiopian dinner (Eric and Jill had never had Ethiopian food before!) and then came home to enjoy some yummy dessert.  :)
As always, our visit was MUCH too short, and because I was juggling two kiddos on my own for most of the visit, I didn't capture as many fun pics as I would have liked.  However, I did manage to snag a handful of the four kids all together in our front yard, minutes before Eric and Jill loaded the kids up to hit the road for their long drive back home.
We talked about how we'll have to start taking pictures of the kids each year in this very same spot when they visit and, looking back over the pics now, I have to agree.  I'd very much like us to develop that type of tradition.
Because who doesn't want a series of pictures with your older son pretending his hand is a gun, shooting out at you, rather than smiling sweetly at the camera like he's supposed to?
Eric, Jill, loved having you guys as always!  Can't wait to see you again soon.  :)
2 pints
I actually got these shirts for Jon (and the boys) for Father's day, but totally missed out on grabbing a picture of the three of them (it was one of those, everyone is cranky and we don't want to deal with crazy Mom and her photo snapping, times).
At any rate, I've been wanting to get the three of them together and what better excuse than Jon leaving this morning for his trip to London (and hey whaddya know, the shirts are even themed!)  He'll be gone for the next 8 days, and we'll sorely miss him.
Have a safe trip and come back soon, love!
Waiting for Daddy
Hanging out at the airport with the boys, plane watching, waiting to pick up Jon. I'm pretty sure this is his plane.
(Logan says, I wish *I* was on that plane!)
Sicky
Poor Callum. Not sure if he has the bug I was fighting earlier this week/weekend, but he's feeling pretty bad this evening (I took this pic this morning when he wasn't showing any signs of fever and vomiting that he's got now). What's worse, he can't return to school tomorrow because of the fever, Jon is out of town and I've got a very important all day meeting tomorrow that I can't miss. :(
So, we're doing the best we can. Jon's taking an earlier flight home (he'll get home a little after 11am) and then I'll go into work late, once he gets home to take over. Thank goodness we both have flexible and understanding employers!
Loganism of the day
Logan, Callum and I dropped Jon off at the airport this morning on our way to school.  As Jon got out of the car, Logan looked up and asked why no one was unbuckling him and letting him out of the car.  I told him he wasn't getting out - we were just dropping Daddy off at the airport and he should say goodbye.
As he waved goodbye to Jon, he turned to me and said:
But Mama, I would LOVE to ride an airplane....
I know Buddy.  Hopefully we can ride an airplane soon - maybe even a very LONG airplane ride to see Daddy next month.
You mean, like to Hawaii?
Even longer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jon is traveling every week this month and possibly several weeks (in a row) next month.  It's going to be a long summer.  The only saving grace for me, is that we may get to join him for one of his trips next month.  And, it's the only saving grace I can give to Logan as well.

Testing his limits

Callum is trying to stand on his own. He can hold himself for a couple of seconds before he plops back down on his knees or butt.

Jon left this morning for a week-long business trip to Miami. It's going to be a long week without him, that's for sure. But wouldn't it be crazy cool if he came back and Callum was standing (without holding onto anything) and cruising, all on his own?! :)

And here's my view at night!

Downtown Seattle

Finished up my work offsite and just checked into our hotel room in downtown Seattle where Jon and the boys will join me tomorrow. We've got a killer view, Seattle Space Needle and all, from the 44th floor of our tower!

Notice the monorail just below, which will be a part of our big trip experience this weekend!

It's snowing!

Had a gorgeous walk back to the hotel after dinner in the snow. Wasn't wearing appropriate snow shoes, but loved it anyway. I hope it continues to snow through the week so that Logan can see it when he (and Jon and Callum) get here on Friday! :)

Wiped out

Indeed, several of my team and I were here until (almost) 2am blowing each other away with our crazy good Karaoke skills. ;-)

Another trip to Redmond

But I don't want you to go.

Why?

Riding the airplane is dangerous!

It's conversations like these that make it really difficult to take off for business trips anymore.  Callum doesn't know any better of course, but Logan's starting to realize when we're gone for long periods of time and the guilt just sets in when he clings to our necks and begs us not to go away.

Jon thought it might make Logan feel better if we told him he'd get to ride an airplane and "choo-choo" train to see me, but that kinda backfired, since he woke up this morning asking if we were going on an airplane today Mommy?  Because it's daytime!

So I've had to carefully explain that I'm leaving today - I need him to be a good boy and big brother - helping Daddy and Callum all week.  In FOUR days - one, two, three, four - he will ride an airplane with Daddy and Callum to "come find me".  And then AFTER the airplane, we will all ride a VERY LONG choo-choo train back home together.  We'll ride it during the day AND the night - we'll even sleep on the train!

We will?  That will be the longest choo-choo train I've ever seen!

Yes, buddy, it sure will.

Home sweet home

Left the very festively decorated (but rainy) Bellevue late this evening. Unfortunately Jon, Logan and Callum are all sick. Guess it's back to being Mommy again! :)

Lonely.

It's much too quiet in here.

I was just catching up on another Mommy blog and she has this neat idea to do a daily picture countdown to Christmas. I looked back through my blog and have almost posted one pic a day since Dec 1st. So I'm going to steal her idea and see how far I get as well!

Day 6: Travel up to Redmond and already missing my munchkins terribly.

The pearly whites!

I noticed Callum's bottom teeth threatening to poke through a few days ago - and sure enough, this weekend his bottom right tooth has cut through (I think his left one will be coming in soon too).

Callum doesn't seem to act any different by it - but of course, he's been "teething" for MONTHS now, the drooling, biting, slobbering machine!  Still, I'm so glad it's not affecting him, since I'll be leaving tomorrow for a week long trip up to Redmond while Jon gets to play his hand at Mr. Mom for awhile.  OOOOoooohhh how fun!  ;-)

Surgery Update

I've been doing really well, each day I'm feeling better and better.  I think I started working a bit too soon after the surgery (I did a phone interview two days after.  It was from home, but still, even that took a lot out of me!), so I had to take it a lot easier with work than I was prepared to do.  Luckily, work (and specifically, my boss) is very understanding!  I finally went into the office this last week for a few hours the first couple of days - felt pretty spent so stayed home again all day Wednesday and then went back in Thursday and Friday for nearly full days in the office.

Sadly, I've been feeling pretty worn, bruised and sore over the weekend - which I wasn't feeling so much the first couple of weeks (mostly then it was fatigued, nauseous and dizzy/woozy - I think the after effects of the general, to be honest).  So, I'm a tad worried what this next week will bring.  I'll just have to take it as easy as I can I think.

On the flip side, Jon has been doing TERRIFIC as Mr. Mom these past couple of weeks - but he's finally starting to reach his threshold toward the end of this last week, as he got hit with a head cold and hasn't been feeling great.  So, mix that with full-on kid duty 24x7 and you have one crabby Daddy.  :(  I've been helping as much as I can - like feeding Callum in his high chair once Jon puts him in his seat, and handling most of the Logan duties, but it all still has its toll (don't we all know that!).  He has to work late tomorrow night, so even though it won't technically be my "two weeks of rest", we'll have to make do.  I think it's close enough that I'll be fine on my own with the kiddos.  I know Jon, for one, is counting the hours - no minutes - until I can help out with Callum once more.  ;-)

Halloweeny!

This year I decided to make the boys' costumes because I had come up with this funny idea to dress them as Thing 1 and Thing 2, ever since last Halloween! I figured, this was the only, and probably last, Halloween where I'd get a say in Logan's (or either) of their costumes, so I was going to take full advantage of it.

The costumes themselves came out okay - I had also wanted to spray paint their hair blue and spike it up nice and tall with a lot of goop, but Logan's hair wouldn't stay spiked and, as much as he was looking forward to having blue hair, when it came time for execution, he wasn't thrilled about it. In fact, he yelled at me many times to stop. *sigh*

The first party I dressed them up was their school's Halloween party. It was a bit chaotic for me, since I had rushed over after work to get them both dressed and ready for the party. Jon was supposed to meet me there to help out, but work held him up and he didn't get home in time for the party. Had I had Jon there to help out, it would have been a more enjoyable party - because the school really went all out in making it a good time for the kids! (dancing, music, balloon lady, playground, food galore) But I was having a tough time chasing after Logan around the playground with Callum in my arms, so we ended up leaving early.

The costumes were a bit of a "disaster" as well. Logan was totally excited about his Thing 1 and Thing 2 costumes all the way up until he had his costume on and was happily pointing it out to all of his friends/teachers. But, then the other kids started getting dressed around us - out came one Spiderman costume after another and Logan suddenly threw a fit! He no longer wanted to be Thing 1 (started to tear it off actually) and instead wanted to be Spiderman, or Superman, or Buzz Lightyear Mom!!

Ugh.

I had flashbacks of my own childhood - where I thought my mom was evil for making me wear a homemade costume while all the other kids around me got to wear these cool store-bought out of the box costumes (much of a luxury in our household, especially since they cost so much money!). And here I was making my own son wear a homemade outfit. If that wasn't me getting a taste of my own medicine... ;-)

He finally got over it, however, and had a blast the rest of the night.

Onto our second party, the following day, where my work was hosting a Halloween Parade, a tradition they do every year for the employees' kids, and a tradition I personally love. :) It's so much fun watching all of the kids tromp around the building, gathering up candy from one bucket to the next and getting to see/meet your coworkers' families. I had an all day training that day, so I arranged to have Jon pick up the boys early from school, dress them and meet me at work so I wouldn't have to leave too early.

Unfortunately, Jon had another work issue to manage and couldn't get away early enough. What's worse, the boys' costumes were at home! So, I sped across the valley, back home, picked up the costumes, back to school, picked up the boys, dressed them and then made it back to work. The parade started at 3:30pm and I arrived at 4:15pm. Oh well. :) We were the very last of the troop - most families had already come and gone save for a few stragglers. But, it didn't seem to matter. Logan had an absolute BLAST collecting candy from one bucket to the next. Overjoyed at how easy it was to fill up his goodie bag in a matter of minutes.

We hung out with a few of my coworkers before taking off to head home (Callum was dog tired and had fallen asleep in my arms).

On the way home, Logan said to me, "Mom, I like your friends and I like your work. Can we see them again?"

Awwwww.
Halloween night we had a few visitors, Aunt Catherine, Uncle Danny, and their friends Nadia and Alan, along with my parents who also stopped by to see the boys in their costumes and give them a treat. Both kids seemed to be excited about all of the attention - Logan lasted a bit longer with me painting his hair blue, although still not long enough for you to see much of the blueness. Oh well. We tried! And now I know. ;-)

Catherine and Nadia joined me and the boys out to trick or treat the 'hood, while Jon and Danny (Alan and my parents had all headed home) stayed at the house to hand out candy. Logan finally caught on that he could get candy from each house he went up to, about half way through, but he was a pretty stubborn little guy when it came to saying "Trick or Treat" or "Happy Halloween" or anything like that. Still, we had a great time and it was fun to get out, see all the kids running from one house to another screaming with glee and enjoy our neighbors and neighborhood.

Hope everyone had a great Halloween!
