Words of Encouragement

Callum's teacher wrote on his daily summary sheet yesterday:

Callum had a great day today.  His mood has definitely improved!

I would have to agree!  From the minute he woke up on Friday after his morning nap (post-surgery), his demeanor has definitely changed.  He seems content, calmer and an overall happier baby.  He is MUCH less clingy and totally fine to instead explore and crawl around the house and play on his own.  I have also noticed he doesn't freak out and get upset the minute he bonks his head on something (like slamming it into the table, or falling backwards on the floor when wrestling with Logan, etc.)  Previously, I had thought I just had gotten used to a toughie kid Logan and that Callum was a more "sensitive" kid.  Now, I'm beginning to think that HEY GENIUS, maybe when he bonked his head on something it actually hurt for a reason!  :)

I've been trying to see if his hearing has improved too - it seems to have, although not as much as I had thought it would.  However, there are definitely changes.  He notices sounds and turns his head to listen a lot more than he used to - but what has been more interesting and unexpected (for me anyway), is that he's had the "startle" reflex a lot more!  I've noticed it a couple of times where something dropped on the floor near his side and he jumped from the noise.  Or, the dogs barked nearby when he wasn't paying attention and sure enough, the noise startled him.  I'm taking all of those as positive signs that his hearing loss wasn't permanent (although we won't definitively know until we do a follow up hearing test in a few weeks).

Callum napped really well all weekend throughout the day.  However, he still had a rough time settling down and sleeping Friday and Saturday nights.  I'm still hopeful that his (night time) sleeping will improve, since Sunday and last night seemed better than the first two nights, but it still seems too early to tell.

Skipping the evening nap

Callum was super fussy and tired but having a hard time calming down to sleep for his evening nap, so I took him upstairs to walk him around in hopes that the movement would lull him to sleep.
I couldn't have been more wrong! He's wide awake and acting like a monkey.

8 months old

Well, it comes to no surprise that Callum quickly picked up on his rocking and scooting and elevated it to full on CRAWLING in just a few short days! He's been making his way around the house on his very own for many many weeks now and is becoming an old pro. He's also extremely eager to stand - and pulls himself up on anything he is able to (when he's strong enough, some of the taller pieces of furniture still allude him). He'll "walk" a few steps while holding onto your fingers but he hasn't quite got the balance down enough to take a few steps on his own. In due time - we know it's around the corner!

He doesn't speak anything more than cooing, babbling, and a constant stream of "dadadadada" :) but he knows what he wants and how to get it. If you walk into the room that he's in, and he wants you to pick him up, he'll immediately crawl to your feet and PULL on your pant legs, whining at the same time, until you give in (or until he escalates to crying if he's really upset, tired or hungry).

He's doing really well at eating - and even though he's been battling one ear infection after another, he's still able to take down a bottle or put a jar of food away no problem. I had started him on some "puffs" and yogurt melts, to give him some practice at picking small objects up with his fingers, but because he's been so sick, it hasn't gone really well (he LOVES to eat them, but if he gets one caught down his throat the wrong way, or inhales one mid-cough, that's the end of the puff AND all of the peas, or squash or yogurt we just fed him, since the choking leads to puking everything back up). So, we're taking a break on "harder" solids for now and sticking with the stuff that doesn't cause him to lose his meal.

He did get a chance to try some juice for the first time this past weekend. Since he's been on so many anti-biotics, the doctors have told us to keep him REALLY hydrated, but on the flip side, milk isn't great when you've got a head cold and are congested, so Dr. Safir gave us the ok this past week to start giving a bit of juice or water instead. Callum was more interested in biting the sippy cup's handles and nipple than he was at drinking the juice. :)

He now has both bottom front teeth in, quite visible and sharp as all hell. A third has been threatening to appear (next to his bottom front left) for a few days now - which makes it hard to tell if all the biting and mouthing and drooling and runny nose is due to (yet) another cold, or just more teething?

Along with (or because of?) the teething and cooing, Callum has discovered his lips and tongue. He absolutely LOVES to play with his lips and make sounds while plucking them with his fingers. And, he's recently discovered the fun art of clicking his tongue - which he does all the time, but particularly if I'm not fast enough with the food at the dinner table. ;-)

In fact, now that he's mobile, sounds are taking on a whole new meaning for Callum. He is free to pick up anything he sees and throw it, drop it, or most often, bang it on the floor or other hard surface. He seems to be pretty curious as he tests out everything he sees to figure out the sound it makes and what happens when he drops it or hits it on something else. It can be nerve-racking for us (not to mention, it upsets Logan anytime Callum rips apart a train track or two from his table!), but we know it's all just a part of the learning and soaking in that he's doing right now. :)

While we love Callum to pieces, we definitely are getting tired of the mid-night wake up calls. It's particularly trying when Logan wakes up too, and/or the two of them are sick. But, we're doing the best we can right now. Days when Logan and Callum are peacefully playing side by side in the living room, with Logan talking to his best friend and expecting answers back, definitely make it all worth while. :)

One hellish night.

Last night Jon and I had one of the rougher nights in a long time.  Callum woke up around 12:30am and wouldn't (or couldn't) go back to sleep... he stayed awake CRYING straight for two hours.  It was horrible.  Jon and I kept taking turns going in to pat him back to sleep, or rock him, or hold him, or try to get him to take some of his bottle.  As we made it through the second hour, it suddenly dawned on me, that he might - JUST MIGHT - have an ear infection.  :(  The nonstop crying was just not like him, but also, he couldn't get comfortable once we laid him down in his crib.  It was clear he was exhausted - he kept falling asleep on our chests, but the minute we laid him back down, he'd wake up crying again.  I finally noticed the pattern.

So, out of desperation to get my boy to sleep, and to possibly catch some zzz's myself, I propped myself up in bed, in a sitting position, holding Callum so that he could fall asleep on my chest.  He immediately passed out around 3am and I sort of slept, and sort of not slept, until he woke up again at about 5:30am.

BRU.  TAL.

I was a zombie most of the morning (as was Jon) - but determined to get in to see our doctor as soon as I could, to confirm my suspicion.  Thankfully, they said to come on over right away.  Dr. Safir acknowledged my instincts were right, as our poor little baby had a horrible ear infection in his right ear.  Sadly, it's the same ear he had an infection in last time around, not more than a month ago.  So, we're going to treat this one a bit more aggressively and with a more watchful eye, since it definitely seems like Callum is more susceptible to ear infections than your average Joe.

I waited around the pharmacy while Callum slept in my arms, and then got the anti-biotics in him as soon as they were ready.  I also gave him a hit of Ibuprofen when we got to his school, just to help with any swelling and pain he might still have.  That seemed to help quite a bit, as he was in pretty good spirits for the day.  I'm crossing my fingers that the anti-biotics kick in quickly so that he starts feeling better soon.  I hate to think he was in that much pain last night with us as clueless parents not knowing what to do (and letting him cry for TWO WHOLE HOURS before it finally dawned on me what was wrong!).

And, I hate to go another night with absolutely no sleep, or rather, sleep next to a man who has gone another night with no sleep.  ;-)

6 month check up

Today was Callum's 6 month check up. He was scheduled to get several shots, as well as take care of his flu shot, however just last night he started coming down with a minor cold. When Dr. Safir checked him out, we were both surprised to find out Callum was dealing with a nasty ear infection. :( so, I got a prescription of anti-biotics and rescheduled our shots for next week instead.

The good news is, Callum's doing great and growing big and strong. He's still in the 90th percentile for height (27.5"), and 60th percentile for weight (17lbs, 4oz). Dr. Safir commented on how sturdy his thighs and calves are - they're like tree trunks! :) He's (finally!) teething and has a bit of a lazy eye, something I've actually noticed for some time but had forgotten to ask about in earlier visits. I'm glad I remembered this time, since Dr. Safir feels it's strong enough to refer Callum to a pediatric ophthalmologist.

Otherwise all is well! Once Callum's ear infection clears, Dr. Safir wants us to try and work him "out" of his habit of waking up in the middle of the night, since he isn't yet sleeping thru the night completely. We'll see how that goes! I think it's just going to take him longer to grow out of it, similar to his brother.

It's 2am

Most people are just heading home after a fun Friday night out drinking, dancing and partying.

I'm up at 2am synching my iPhone (with a few new apps to play with), while waiting for my baby to fall back to sleep.

Ahhhh yes. Our days (and nights) sure have changed over the years.

Sweet Potatoes

Last night I decided to try out sweet potatoes with Callum. He didn't seem to notice the change from carrots to sweet potatoes - as he continued to wolf them down just as fast as he's been eating the carrots. He's been a really healthy eater, polishing off 2 jars of food each night for dinner in addition to his bottle of milk! He's also still waking up once in the middle of the night to down another bottle - I feel like we can't keep up nor get enough food into him! (I recall feeling this same way with Logan too).

The good news is, he's adjusted back to a more "normal" night time routine this past week and hasn't been as awful on us throughout the night like he was doing over the weekend, now generally just waking long enough to polish off his bottle and then pass out again for another few hours before morning. Jon has also started helping out more, waking up and covering the middle of the night feeding most nights this week, since I'm down to nursing 1-2 times a day (usually morning and bedtime). Thank goodness too, because with the ridiculous work week I've been having, I've needed all the help I can get just to keep from toppling over each day!

And don't get me started on what a challenge it's been just getting out of the house early enough to get into the office at a decent hour! Let's just say I'm still adjusting to being back to work full time.

TGI(F)F

The last two weeks have been a blur, on top of the previous two weeks (in Hawaii) which were also a blur.

I have so many pics to upload I don't know where to begin. And each day I'm just creating a bigger and bigger hole to dig myself out of.

I've been super sick since the weekend - took Monday off to literally sleep ALL. DAY. LONG. which seemed to help but unfortunately not quite enough. Still recovering.

Had Callum's checkup and interviews all day Tuesday and then my work offsite Wednesday and Thursday.

Last night was a rude awakening and welcome home - as both Callum and Logan woke up several times throughout the night, staggering their wake up calls, so that Jon and I were only ever able to sleep about an hour tops at each shift. No one ever mentions that little gem about parenting two kids. It was brutal.

I decided to work from home today so I could rest. Haven't yet done that, but thinking I may go lie down now before it's time to pick up the kids from school and tackle the 6-8pm Chaotic Evening with a Skosh of Uncontrollable Delirium.

Thankfully, Jon's work schedule has lightened up so he's done (for now) with the late nights.

I'm really looking forward to some downtime with Jon tonight as well as a quiet weekend! :)

At the doctor's

Callum had another bad night so I decided to take him (and Logan) to the doctor's this afternoon. Logan is fine, however poor Callum appears to have bronchitis. :(

The doc prescribed an anti-biotic to fight off any bacteria, as well as an anti-inflammatory to help with the wheezing and tightness in his lungs. I need to take him back on Friday for a follow up, to make sure the meds are working and he's feeling better... I'm hoping they kick in right away so he can get some sleep tonight.

Rolling Over

Callum's been very close to rolling over on his own the last couple of weeks - we've been "showing" him how to do it in Hawaii to see if that would help. In any case, he rolled over on his own in the middle of the night last night! Even though we were dog tired, Jon and I took a couple of minutes to celebrate for our little guy and make him smile a groggy sleepy smile.

YAY!! (this excites us more than you know, since it means sitting up on his own is just around the corner!)

Callum's actually been having a really rough time since we've been home, and sad to say, last night was no better. We met my parents at Stacks for lunch yesterday and then headed to their house so they could have some grand kid time while Jon and I snuck off for an afternoon movie (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - loved it!). They had a nice time visiting with Logan and Callum - but poor Callum was running a mild fever and having a really hard time with his teething. That continued on through the night, making (at least) a second sleepless night in a row for Jon and I. :( Poor guy is biting on anything he can, won't eat much, pretty warm to the touch, has a runny nose and slobbering like crazy.

To top it off, he's got a bad cough - which we're not sure is due to all the additional slobber and runny nose, or if he's come down with an actual cold. It's hard to tell, but my guess is he may have a slight cold/cough which just sounds worse right now because of the extra slobber. :( Because he's so uncomfortable, he's been sleeping about 2 hour chunks at a time, but no more. And unfortunately, I don't see his teeth breaking through very soon. With work (for both of us - eeps!) coming up on Tuesday, things aren't looking good. But, what can you do? We're just plowing through as best we can.

My last day

Today is my last official day of maternity leave (even though technically I have three more days before work starts, since we're coming up on a long holiday weekend). I'm a tiny bit stressed and nervous about jumping back into the middle of crazy work after such a long time off. But I'm also looking forward to the change and seeing my old coworkers again. :) Since Tuesday will also be Callum's first day to start daycare, I actually dropped him off at school this morning, when I dropped off Logan, to spend time with his new teachers and classmates for a couple of hours. He was all smiles and did just fine - sleeping the majority of the time. When I arrived to pick him up for lunch, he was just waking up from a short nap, a little groggy and not quite sure where he was. I'm sure the screaming baby near him was also a different and strange experience for him to wake up to! :)

As for me, I miscalculated how difficult and time consuming it would be to get the kids out of the house this morning, given the time change from Hawaii. I had a 10am PT appointment that I had wanted to get to - but that would have meant getting out of the house a bit after 9am, which is 6am Hawaii time. :( I woke Logan up around 9:20am which he was NOT at all happy about - still very much asleep, cranky and whiny - fighting me the entire time I dressed him for school. Can't say I blame him. ;-) But, I figure this will force him back onto our time quickly anyway (Callum, on the other hand, will be harder to transition I fear!). Unfortunately, I was still too late by the time I got the boys dropped off to make my appointment - so I ran a couple of errands (grocery shopping and a pedicure!) instead, before going back to pick up Callum and meet my parents for lunch.

At lunch, Callum was on and off (as he has been for the last week). His teeth are definitely bothering him - he jumps at any chance he can get to bite and chew your fingers and is a nonstop slobbering fool. But, when I look in his mouth, it seems like it's still going to take awhile for any of those teeth to finally break through, poor guy. :( Such is the way it goes at this stage, I guess.

Derailed

The tabs at the top of my browser should give you an idea of my daily routine in front of the computer. It should also tell you how my day is going today.

Gmail - Inbox (1) :: Other Mail - Inbox :: Google Reader (1000+) :: Facebook :: AT&T :: Pies - The Pioneer Woman Cooks :: Diastasis facts :: Exercise After Pregnancy :: Amazon.com Online Shopping :: Vomiting

I read my mail, I read (too many) blogs, I read Facebook. I (need to) pay my phone bill. I (wistfully) read endless recipes, deciding what to try next (clue: pies!). I read about diastasis recti and look for inspiring postpartum exercises. Often times, I buy a thing or two from my favorite online store. ;-)

And then, when all else fails, I use the Internet to do research.

At first, I thought today was going to be GREAT! Callum had another wonderful night of sleep - a full 9.5 hours straight. Granted, my blouse was soaked since I hadn't pumped or nursed for so long, and I had to get up at 5:30am, but I was still happy.

I've been hoping - nay PRAYING - that he'd start sleeping for longer stints at a time. We are nearing the end of my maternity leave, after all, and there's only so much (productive) work I can get done with a few hours of sleep.

Logan woke up about 6:30am - which is a tad early for him, but not out of the ordinary. What was out of the ordinary, however, was that he had gotten up in the middle of the night and with no whimpering or crying at all, climbed into our bed and fell asleep. We weren't sure why but chalked it up to a bad dream or something.

I got him his usual morning bottle of milk, set him up with Bob the Builder in the den and climbed back into bed with Jon and Callum to see if I could pat Callum back to sleep (since he DID get up early). About 7am we hear Logan crying - Jon was getting up and about to jump in the shower, so he yelled to the front of the house, asking what was wrong. Logan says "I made a mess!" I thought maybe he just spilled some milk.

Oh how wrong I was.

Unfortunately he had puked up what milk he had drank.

Jon stormed around the house cleaning it up and telling me that this was it with milk in a bottle. The milk nazi had returned. *sigh*

He stripped Logan down and the two of them took a quick shower.

I had just gotten Callum to sleep and was drifting off myself when I heard Jon cussing up a storm. While dressing Logan, he puked again. :( It seemed there was something more going on than just an extra gulp of milk not staying down. He was pretty upset by the whole thing as he sat, heaving over the side of the bathtub.

I've lost count of how many Aisle 5 Clean Ups and Loads of Laundry I've done so far today. I fear it's not over yet. Based on my research (see above), we're to keep Logan as hydrated as possible, but only feed him a couple of teaspoons of clear liquid every 15 minutes, slowly building up to larger amounts as he holds it down. If he vomits again, we need to start over (and with a smaller amount).

I have yet been able to get past a few tablespoons.

YAY.

So much for getting Callum's room done and knocking those pesky to-do items off my list!

The Glorious 10

Callum slept an amazing 10 hours straight last night! (Thank God too since I really needed the sleep after the night before). I'm sure it had nothing to do with the long day of traveling and several interrupted naps of his. ;-)

Also, two "Loganisms" from yesterday:

1) Callum was very unhappy being stuck in his car seat for so long yesterday, while we drove back to Austin to catch our flight. When we pulled over for a fill up, I tried feeding him to calm him down. Unfortunately it wasn't working so well and Callum was still pretty pissed. At which point, Logan informed me, "Mommy, he wants his Logan".

2) When Jon told Logan to stay out of the parking lot, else he'd get hit by a car, Logan replied, "It's impossible!". Aieeee.

Houston, we have a problem

I think nature's evil evil prank on Jon and I are to bless us with boys who are extremely active sleepers. I remember having the same problem with Logan and am now going through it all again with Callum. Unless he's in a DEEP SLEEP when I lay him down in the crib, he will spin himself around 180 degrees, pushing off the rails of the crib and banging his head against the other side, waking himself up.

Which is particularly frustrating at 5am when I still need a couple more hours of sleep.

This last pic was taken just a few minutes ago - where I literally replaced him (with head on the cloth diapers, to the left) at least three times, each time with him spinning back around in about 2 seconds flat and then screaming bloody murder because it woke him up. ARGH.

Delay Tactics

Of all the bedtime ritual delay tactics (need milk, need juice, want to read a book, need to go potty, want to rub my back, scared of [fill in the blank], lay down with me Mommy, need my Daddy, etc.), I think I like tonight's the best.

Tonight, I was attacked by the Kissing Monster.

Logan got it in his head to start kissing me non-stop this evening, as I lay next to him in bed singing him songs and quieting him down for bedtime. It was pretty cute at first, just a small peck here and then another peck there. But then it got so out of hand, I actually started laughing, and couldn't stop! Logan caught on of course. So, the more he kissed me (in the end, tackling me as I tried to "hide"), the more I couldn't contain my joy and laughed even harder. He was thrilled to detain his bedtime a few more minutes. And, I was thrilled to be so very loved. :)

X-Rated

Callum has this habit where he wraps his arm/hand into my shirt and pulls it over his face while nursing or sleeping (don't worry, he's just sleeping here!). It's pretty funny.

Is this a sign of a "player-to-be"? ;-)

Editor's Note: I forgot to mention Callum's conked out here after a traumatic morning, where he decided to shit so hard he blew out his diaper, onesie and the side of his car seat....aaaaand then fell asleep.

I'll spare you any details or pics ;-) but let's just say I cut my PT appointment short, raced home, took apart the car seat, climbed into the tub with the little guy and proceeded to wake him up (and piss him off) while hosing everything down.

Yay! for blowouts. Not a part of parenting I enjoy.

Or, jazz hands? Callum fell asleep like this in the swing tonight. Too cute!
