Guppy Class 2010
We got to the pool and he immediately got in on his own without a blink of an eye. I'm sure having Robert there with him was also a nice distraction! ;-)
Both boys did GREAT! I was super proud to see Logan take to the water so easily and have such a wonderful time. He was laughing and smiling and having a blast the entire time. I think being able to touch the bottom of the pool by himself definitely helped. And of course having Robert to goof off with also helped.
In fact, I felt pretty bad for the poor kid of a teacher who was constantly keeping Logan and Robert in check, trying to get them to pay attention, not wander off, sit down and listen to the instructions, etc. At one point Jenn and I joked with another parent that it was like herding cats.
And I told Jenn we should have warned him what he was in for with our two boys. We'll see how he does for the next few months, but I might just have to get him a "Congrats - you survived my son!" gift after it's all over. ;-)

Loganism(s) of the day
1) After swim class:
I want to go in the boys room.
Mommy can't go in there.
Why not?
Because I'm not a boy.
But I'm a boy.
2) In the changing room:
What are those? (pointing to my boobs)
Those are Mommy's boobies.
Oh! Mommy's boobies are big. Logan's boobies are small.
3) Out to dinner with my family: my brother Zane took Logan to the bathroom when he said he needed to go potty. Upon returning, about 10 feet away from our table, Logan does a big fist pump in the air and yells to us at the top of his lungs:
I WENT POOP!
He sat down, turned to me and quietly said:
Mommy, I feel better.
And then, a couple of minutes later, he follows with another fist pump and:
GO SHARKS!

Dinosaur Hoody Towel

What's that noise?
That's a little boy.
What's he doing?
I'm not sure honey. But I think he might be growling.
Yes, don't mind us. Those loud obnoxious ROARS you hear coming from the dressing room would be my son. He thinks it's great fun. In fact, he gets louder the more I beg him to stop.
I don't know how I happen to attract such crafty friends, particularly when I am sooooo NOT crafty. But nonetheless, check out this dinosaur hooded towel that Amanda made for Logan!! It's A-W-E-S-O-M-E. And so timely for the summer, swim class, and the (Maui) beaches. Oh right, and bath time too.
She also made one for Callum. His has a very cool monster pattern on one side. So, to make sure Logan didn't feel left out, she cranked out this one for him. How thoughtful! Isn't it (and he) adorable?!?
Thanks Amanda! We love them!! :)

Summer swim begins!
Anyway, we're going twice a week so I figure the frequency will help get him back on track. And with our upcoming summer vacation to Maui (woo!), I'd like it if he felt more confident in the water than he is right now. I'm also taking advantage of my maternity leave by going to the early morning class. And OMG the difference! It was actually quiet and calm when we arrived, versus the screaming packed chaos of parents and kids after work hours. Our class is actually quite pleasant. :)
This morning while Jon was getting Logan ready for school, I heard him ask if he could go swimming (he asked again when I picked him up from school this afternoon), which was great to hear. There may be hope for us after all. ;-)

And the holidays have begun...
Driving to swimming class tonight, Logan put his index finger to his lips and whispered "Shhhhh. Quiet" as soft as could be. It was funny because I've never heard or seen him do that before (clearly someone at school is telling him to be quiet quite often!) but more than that, I was pretty exhausted from a long day and hadn't been talking much during our drive. Logan on the other hand, was FULL of happy spirits and making enough noise for the both of us! Apparently he realized how loud he actually was and decided to turn it down a notch or two. :)
We dropped Jon off at the airport early this morning for a quick business trip before we head off as a family to start our Thanksgiving vacation. He gets home late Thursday night and we hop on a plane bright and early Friday morning. Nothing like cutting it close! ;-) Logan was upset at Jon leaving (again), but quickly perked up once I drove by at a snail's pace to watch all the planes taking off and landing. We also did a quick stop at a Starbuck's drive through for his favorite "nack" he likes to call "sant" (croissant).
Yesterday I had a regular checkup to see how the baby is doing - and happy to report all is great! I had been starting to get a little nervous lately since I haven't gained much weight (when I was pregnant with Logan I was packing on a couple pounds a week, NO JOKE, throughout the entire pregnancy), my nausea has gone away, and I haven't had much of an appetite. Since it's still a bit early, I have only felt flutters here and there but no regular constant
So, at my appointment yesterday, my doc told me to try and not stress or worry too much (HAAAA!!) and that I was doing great. We listened for the baby's heartbeat which was beating fast and strong as ever. THANK GOD. It's one of the best things I could have heard yesterday to keep me going for another few weeks.

We spent this past weekend visiting with Jon's parents who drove up from LA for a couple of days. They got in on Friday; once Logan and I got home, we all took off for a yummy super filling Italian dinner at Fratellos. On Saturday, we visited the Children's Discovery Museum, where Logan had plenty of fun as usual, and Abuelita/Abuelito Riedy got to see him in prime time action. Unfortunately I completely forgot to take my camera with me that morning. :( We came back and had lunch together, and then everyone rested while Logan took a nice long nap. We had another delicious meal for dinner that night at Hobee's - and once we put Logan down for the evening, the four of us played a competitive game of Settlers of Catan. I'm happy to report I TOTALLY WON. Mwahahahahahahahaaa!! :)

On Sunday we had an early morning breakfast at our favorite spot Stacks and then spent some time walking off the pancakes and waffles around the farmer's market in downtown Campbell. Alicia and Paul had to leave about noon to get back on the road, and left while we put Logan down for his afternoon nap. We had a fun visit with them and I know Logan enjoyed all of the extra love and attention! It was a great start to the holiday season - where Logan is going to get to see relative after relative after relative. Wheeeeee!!

A testament to swim diapers
My little anal dude, takes after his mother. It doesn't matter if he destroys them right after, he's always sure to line stuff up perfectly first. :)
Tonight was - interesting. Since it's Tuesday, that means swim class. Unfortunately, Logan's taken a step back in terms of swim class, not enjoying very much of it, clinging to me the entire time as if he's going to D-I-E or as if I'm going to let him D-I-E. It's particularly frustrating when he swam like a fish during his last set of classes. :(
But tonight I knew something was off. More than usual. Most of the time Logan just lets his legs fall limp, not wanting to kick when I ask (even though he totally knows how to!). About 20 minutes into tonight's lesson however, instead of falling limp, his legs stiffened up as he pulled his feet into his chest. I was a total idiot, didn't pay attention to the signs, and instead tried to "kick" his legs for him (moving them up and down).
He started to whine, resisting my help. I looked down only to see Logan's infamous beet red face squished up into a painfully concentrated expression as he worked on a massive poop.
Right in the middle of class.
Right in the middle of the pool.
CRAP.
I quickly assessed which side would be easiest to clamor out of as my son clinged to my neck, scrunched up more than ever.
I turned to our teacher, handed her Logan as I climbed out of the pool, asking her to hand him to me once I was out. She was completely lost until I hissed "He's pooping!", as if to say Lady if you don't act fast and help me out, we may have a nice mess on our hands!
She got the point, helped us out, and I dashed us to the locker room as fast as I could.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find my wipes in the swim bag (I found them later at the very bottom of course!) so I had to wet paper towels to clean up Logan's poor bottom. That actually wasn't as bad though, as trying to peel off a wet swimsuit that has a bigass piece of poop stuck in it, all the while trying not to get any poop on you, the kid, or anywhere else - it was a comical feat and let's just say I was too embarrassed to look up at all the other moms in the locker room who were probably staring at me in horror as my son stood on the changing table buck naked with bits of poop still stuck to his cheeks.
I had actually contemplated not going to swim class at all tonight since I had a major headache (after a long all-day training class), I still have to pack for my trip out tomorrow and take care of a million other chores before the morning. Had I gone with my gut, I wouldn't have been using makeshift wipes in a public restroom.
It's too bad I don't drink, because I'm pretty sure a big glass of Pinot would be perfect right about now.
I guess I'll have to make do with a few Ghiradelli dark chocolates instead. ;-)

Mean Mommy!

Tia Catarina
Unfortunately, Logan wasn't as cooperative as usual, so poor Catherine had her hands full tonight. He wasn't happy about climbing in and out of the pool, jumping back into the water, or even lying on his back to get his ears wet! :( But even still, they ended up having a great time together and I'm so glad Logan had some extra time to spend together with his Aunt.

And, of course, Mr. Logan absolutely LOVED the extra attention he received all night long.
Speaking of extra attention, we have a family packed weekend ahead of us, as Jon's parents (and sister Sarah) will be getting into town tomorrow night to visit for the weekend.
Thanks again Catherine (and Nadia) for a great visit tonight!

'Vu' (aka Fish)
This summer Logan and I have been attending swim classes every Tuesday and Thursday nights. We did the first 8 sessions with Robert and his mommy Jenn back in June. We then took a month break and just recently started up another set of 8 sessions (Jenn and Robert decided not to join us this round).
I'm not sure if Logan had a fairy-fish godmother visit him during that month break, or if he finally started connecting the dots on his last class, but the difference between the two sessions has been amazing.
In June, he was okay with the water, but not one with the water. He tolerated the class. He wasn't happy about getting his face wet and he certainly wasn't happy about laying on his back and getting his ears wet.
This time around is a completely different story. From day one, he's been swimming like crazy. When I tell him to kick, he pounds his feet up and down as fast as he can. When I tell him to use big arms, he reaches as far out in front of him as he can, doggy paddling to the nearest toy in front of him. When I say "1, 2, 3... Big breath! Eyes in!" he laughs, giggles, squeezes his eyes shut and LUNGES for the water in front of him (regardless of whether I'm there or not).
While I'm holding him and listening to instructions from the teacher, he is generally splashing in the water, or kicking his feet, or dunking his face head-on into the water, or tilting his head from side to side, getting his ears wet voluntarily. All the while laughing and giggling and having the time of his life.
I try my best to hold the squirming kid tight so he doesn't drown. Meanwhile, he's pushing off of me as hard as he can. Because apparently I'm holding him down.
WHO IS THIS KID??
Tonight was no different of course. We practiced "wall walks" - where the kids hang off the side like monkeys and hand-over-hand walk the length of the wall. Most of the kids were screaming and stopping mid-wall, scared they were going to fall. Logan, on the other hand, was crazy strong, holding his head high above water (unless he intentionally dropped low enough to take a SIP of the water, yes he does that too...) and moving way too fast for the line.
Several times I had to slow him down to pause and wait for the girl in front of him to catch her breath. He'd get impatient and push his feet against the wall to launch out at me (standing behind him) and I'd scramble to catch him before he took in too many gulps. What's amazing about all of this is just two months ago, in the June sessions, when we practiced "wall walks" - Logan didn't get it at all. Every time I'd try to get him to hold onto the side of the wall, he'd just LET GO.
I can't help but think that the (near) back-to-back classes have made a difference. And it's definitely convinced me to continue on. I don't think I'll keep up every single month, and thankfully, once we start the Fall sessions, it backs down to once a week (twice a week rushing out of work early is brutal!). But, I'm definitely going to keep him in the classes as long as I can keep up myself.
Speaking of keeping up, tonight I barely made it to the class at all. Since Jon isn't home this week, I had to run and pick up Lola from her checkup appointment (cancer is still in total remission and she is looking fabulous!) first, before going home to change Logan and I. Traffic was a pain since there was an accident on the way home, so we were running late. Still, I got us both changed and packed up the car to go. Once we got there, I grabbed Logan and our bags to rush to class, only to notice I had forgotten to bring towels.
Uhhhhh. We kinda need towels Bree.
Class was about to start in a minute or so. There was no way I could drive back home to get some towels and still make it back in time for even part of the class (the class is only 30 minutes long).
Luckily, I still had Logan's travel tent in the car, where I keep some spare (baby-sized receiving) blankets stuffed inside.
I thought OH WHAT THE HELL.
I grabbed the blankets (which barely cover my ass) and off we went. A sight to behold I'm sure.

Robert turns 2!
Yesterday we spent the majority of the day at the Jodoins, celebrating Robert's 2nd Birthday! (he turns 2 on Tuesday) The first hour of the party, Logan was passed out in Robert's crib (he fell asleep on the ride home after being picked up from my parents, who had babysat Friday night to give Jon and I a free night out).
We had an excellent time - plenty of food, company, games and toys to go around for all. We even took the kids in the pool for a little bit (unfortunately, Logan didn't have as great a time as usual in the water, I think because the water was too cold for him), which was perfect since it was pretty warm outside.
Two highlights of the day (for me anyway) were when Logan tried eating with a fork and knife, something he's been all about these days. I’m assuming it’s because he sees us doing it and wants to do it himself. But still amazing to watch him try (sometimes successfully!) cut up his food and eat it. Just one more thing to remind us of how much our little guy is growing up!
Logan was also fascinated by Robert's new wooden train set - and it was wonderful to see him work out how to fit the tracks together on his own, and get a kick out of the train cars sticking together (via magnets). Jon and I have been thinking about getting him a train set sometime soon (if we can find the room!), so it was really fun to see him take to it so quickly!

Once cake and presents were done, most of the family and friends took off - and only the die-hards (the Hicksons and ourselves), stayed until the bitter end. ;-) We had about an hour break where the three kids were all napping, so we started a game of Settlers of Catan, but didn't get to finish before the kids woke up. I believe Jon, Nathan and Jarrod all declared themselves winners, but little did they know I had several points hiding in my hand. So, Internets, I think I was actually the real winner in that game. ;-)
We finally headed home after the kids started winding down, over stimulated from the day's events, I'm sure. Still, we had a blast and were so glad we could make Robert's big day. Happy Birthday again, Mr. Robert! :)

Today, Jon spent another handful of hours lying on his belly at the mercy of his tattoo artist while Logan and I did a little shopping and then lunched at The Counter with my parents before heading home to nap and do chores. With the wonderful summer weather, I've been trying to take advantage of our weekends as much as possible. The only downside is I'm totally whipped and need another two days to recuperate before work begins. Funny how that is.
(Click on any of the pics above for more from Robert's birthday!)

3GS Baby!
One of the main reasons I decided to snatch one up was for the video camera (and improved digital camera) - since I almost always have my phone with me, but don't always carry around one of our two cameras. So, tonight on our front porch, hanging out in our brand new chairs before swim class, I decided to test out the video myself. It's a little long but I left most of it in so that you could hear Logan say a few words (altho, he's more interested in his juice than chatting with Mommy). *sigh*
You can
(Funny, the quality looks a lot better on my iMac than it does on YouTube. Still, not bad for a phone.)

Hot Summer Nights
We had another busy busy weekend. But, before I blog about that, I remembered a few pics I recently took with my iPhone that I had forgotten to post about. Specifically, a couple of Logan's cousin Luke (and Renee and Logan) while out to dinner on Father's Day. What cutie pies!

And then a few more from last Tuesday night's pizza outing with Robert (and Jenn) after a fun swim class. It hadn't dawned on Jenn nor I what fun a few old-school arcades would be, but we should have known. Lights! Buttons! Balls! Cars! Duh.

Saturday morning Logan and I both got much needed haircuts. We then spent the rest of the day relaxing - well, sort of. I got some chores done while Logan napped, and Jon went up to the city to get some work done. That's our definition of "relaxing" these days.
That afternoon, I dropped Logan off with my parents and then took the train up to the city to meet with Jon and several friends. Eric (one of Jon's best friends) is in town visiting so it was a good excuse for everyone to get together.
While we were out catching up with friends, Logan spent time exploring my parents' neighborhood. They went to my old elementary school (the school has since shut down but the playgrounds are still there) to play. The twisty adventurous slide was the best, I hear. After that, they took a walk to a nearby business complex which has some nice landscaped grounds full of fun things, like plants, bugs and creeks, to explore. Logan happened upon a flock of ducks that were VERY exciting. All in all, a really nice night out (and all the exploring tuckered our little guy out!)
This morning we picked him up and went over to the Jodoins' house to visit. We had grand plans of hopping in the pool, but no one had the energy to get farther than the living room couches. ;-) It's probably just as well, it hit about 100 degrees around noon time and the boys were already pretty tired. They played with cars and balls galore and I had the pleasure of reading Robert his Potty Time with Elmo book because he insisted "Auntie Bree" read it rather than his Mommy. Sorry Jenn! ;-) I figure it's good practice for when Logan starts potty training.
We quickly left as Logan started to have a meltdown. Thankfully, he fell asleep in the car ride home. I took the long way home to give him a few more minutes of snoozing time - but when transferring him from the car to the crib, he woke up. Usually, he'll snuggle up to his blankets and fall right back to sleep. Not this time. :( It turned into a battle of wills. He screamed and hollered and cried. I finally went in with a bottle and we rocked and he downed his bottle and rested his head on my chest. He was very sleepy, but didn't want to fall asleep. I finally put him back in his crib to lay down and he spent the next 30 minutes or so just playing in his crib, never falling asleep. *sigh* When Jon got home (he had been out running errands), he tried the same (rocking, holding, calming Logan down). Logan pointed to his crib saying "night night", Jon laid him down, and he proceeded to roll around playing in his crib again.
He finally won - never actually taking a nap (argh!) - so we packed everyone up to head to his friend Max's first birthday party. We had a great time visiting with friends (many old eBay coworkers of Jon's) but after a couple of hours we had to split since Logan was starting another one of his infamous meltdowns. By the time we got home, he had calmed down enough to eat a little bit of dinner before bedtime. The poor guy had a pretty crazy busy (and hot!) weekend, so I didn't blame him for demanding his crib the minute we were done changing him into his pj's for the night.

Kick, Kick, Kick!
In any case - we had a really nice time and I think Logan's going to like the class much more this time around. We practiced kicking forward and floating on our backs, dipping their faces in the water and doing big round forward swimming arms. Lots of exercises and tons of toys to entice the kids with. The class was nice and small (all boys! Logan, Robert and two others) - and for the first few minutes of class as the teacher was reminding us of the pool rules, both Logan and Robert were content splashing each other wildly in the face. Definitely the class "trouble makers".
Logan clung to me for dear life - which is funny since he can't get enough of water play time or baths at home - wrapping his legs tightly around my waist. But, by the end of the class, he was finally loosening up and actually even trying to kick his legs some on his own which was neat! :)
We were both beat when we got home - he from swim class, me from an early morning con call (which meant dropping Logan off at school by 7:30am - yikes!) and single parenting this week. I can't wait until (late) tomorrow night, when Jon is back home.

Time to lower the mattress
Instead, I was in for a big surprise.
As I've mentioned before, he's getting the hang of rocking on all fours whenever he gets the chance now. Only tonight, after getting up on all fours, he then rocked back slightly, tucked his feet close in under his butt and then just let his weight fall backwards. And then with his hands, he just PUSHED himself up, to sit up all on his own!
I let out a huge whoop, I was so excited :) Of course, that got him going the little ham. So he just laughed and giggled and smiled some more.
In the middle of his 3rd or 4th attempt, Jon happened to call me on his way home. Half screaming into the phone I breathlessly tell him what he's missing, I'm so damn excited (why? I have no clue, I was just GIDDY with excitement.)
Jon says, oh yeah. He did that last night.
WHAT?!?!?!?
Well, I didn't realize it at the time, but I guess he did it last night.
What do you mean?
When he was crying last night (about 3am), and I went in to check on him, he was sitting up in his crib crying..... I thought it was a little weird that he was sitting up and wondered how he got there, but I didn't think much about it since I was still half asleep.
WELL DAMN. If that didn't just suck all the wind out of my sails.
Still, it was a super fun development to witness tonight. When Jon got home we had Logan practice a few more times in front of him too (though the kid was finally starting to wear out).
Guess it's time to lower the mattress. (My back is already wincing at the thought of it. Aiieeeeee!)

I love the smell of vomit in the morning
I know folks are wondering where I am, how Logan and I are doing, and where all the frequent blog postings are.... here's a quick update from the week (things are fine, just a little hectic with my hands full while Jon was gone):
Little Logan is still a bit under the weather but we're not quite sure what with. It seems like he's got a little bug with all the throw up (the other morning he spewed a nice puddle of it while half asleep, through his crib railings and onto the floor and rug beneath) and explosive diarrhea I've been cleaning up. Or, maybe it's his way of saying he missed Daddy this week? I know I did.
The upside is, after dousing us with milky puke this morning, he then smiled and laughed and gurgled and coo'd like nothing was wrong at all, so at least he's in his usual charming good mood while being sick. :)
I ended up taking Logan to the dermatologist since the rash on his face got a lot worse - turns out he's got seborrheic dermatitis (they think the heat wave we had this past week set it off). Can't say I'm entirely surprised given he's had skin issues since birth. So we now have a(nother) new lotion to put on his face. I applied some last night and it's already 100% better this morning. Cool.
We had skipped swim class on Tuesday night with all that was going on, but I took Logan on Thursday and we had a great time. We're still practicing getting our faces wet, and now learning how to turn around and grab for the side after falling in (from a sitting position on the edge of the pool). We also just started the motions of turning over from back to tummy to back again (to get them used to turning and floating on their back if they fall in). Great, practical stuff in my opinion, and I'm really glad we have him going to the classes.
I lost 2lbs from my first week on weight watchers. Let's hope the trend continues!
Twyla is still on the roof. I'm getting desperate and about to plead with our neighbor, the fireman, to help get her down since it's going on a week now....!!! We'll try to take another stab at getting her down this weekend, now that Jon's home to help.
Sanka has diabetes. Her sugar levels are through the roof. I visited the vet yesterday and received a tutorial on how to give her insulin shots, which we'll start on Monday. Twice a day. We have special food to give her as well. We have to take her in after a few days to measure her glucose and see if the dosage is right or needs some adjusting.
Feels like life just got a little more complicated. But, I know we can handle it.
Yes we can.

Getting our face wet
I'm currently under doctor's orders to stay put, lying down most of the day, and to not get up, walk around, do chores and most importantly, NOT carry anything over 5lbs.
So let's see. How much does Logan weigh these days? Yeaaaaaaaaah.
Because of that, Jon is currently Mr. Mom and will continue to be for the next couple of days while I stay gimp and totally useless around the house. :( I think we'll BOTH be happy when I am able to start helping out again!
And, because I can't hold Logan or do any activities at the moment, Jon took Logan to swim class tonight. I still went so I could take some pictures, of course! :)

Pearly Whites
We were pretty sure something was going to break through soon with all the biting and gnawing that Logan has been doing this past weekend. And, this evening after our 2nd swim class (which went great, Logan and Robert both did much better and Jenn and I were much less frazzled) I noticed a little teeeeeeny white speck on his front bottom gum. I asked Jenn to take a look and feel it, and she agreed, a little razor sharp tooth has emerged.
It's still too small to take a pic (and Logan was way too exhausted tonight to even let me try anyway) but I'll try later this weekend to post up for all (the grandparents) to see. :)
It's exciting that we've hit another milestone -- yet also really sad for me. Logan's toothless-all-gums-grin is so incredibly happy and infectious. Not to say his smile with teeth won't be -- because we all know he will inherit my smile and not his Dad's -- but, I know that now all of his teeth are going to start pushing through at an alarming rate and he'll no longer have that cute-baby-awwwwww look that we've come to adore....
and instead start looking more like a toddler.
oh no.

Deep Sleep
I've heard that Michael Phelps' mom decided to start him on swimming at a really early age, in part because she couldn't CONTAIN the crazy hyper kid and thought that swimming would help him release a lot of his extra pent up energy.... I like the way she thinks. It's pretty obvious little Logan is going to be just as hyperactive. So, if last night's deep sleep was any indication of post-swim-class-nights to come, I'm all for it. Can I sign him up for every single class from now until he's oh....
18?? ;-)
